Wunderlich Cylinder Head Protector – the precise, comprehensive addition to the original engine protection bar

Stone chips, branches, rock edges, a tip-over off-road – or worse, a crash – can quickly damage the thin-walled valve covers of the 1300 ShiftCam boxer engine, even if the original engine protection bar and filler plate are installed. Scratches are the least of your worries. Considering the intricate design of the ShiftCam valve system, it makes sense to proactively protect the cylinder head. Since the exposed valve covers are only friction-mounted, any forceful impact can cause them to shift and potentially damage the sophisticated valve train. This makes additional cylinder head protection especially important – particularly in rugged use, as the ShiftCam cylinder heads are among the most expensive components of the GS.

The aluminium-coloured cylinder head guard is subjected to an elaborate, multi-stage finishing process after precise laser cutting and careful deburring, so that the surface matches that of the original engine protection bar perfectly. For this purpose, the aluminium is blasted with ceramic beads. During blasting trials, the grain sizes and pressure were determined to achieve the perfect surface finish after the final clear anodising process. The result speaks for itself and is worth the effort.

That’s why our engineers specified that the Wunderlich cylinder head protector must be solidly built and extremely robust to reduce the risk of damage. Our reinforced version replaces the original filler plate and mounts directly onto the original engine protection bar's mounting points, adding structural stability.

Installation is straightforward and easily accessible on the original engine protection bar, thanks to its high-quality aluminium alloy construction. Four-millimetre material thickness, a form-fitting, secure attachment and robust mounting are the hallmarks of this shield-like protector. The striking cut-outs aid ventilation, and their dynamic shape that tapers towards the rear integrates perfectly into the overall design.
